It may be noted that the PhD program of the Department is regulated by the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Awards of MPhil/PhD Degree) Regulation, 2009 published in the Gazette of India, July 11, 2009 (Vol III-Sec 41).
All PhD students have to undergo the Pre-PhD Course Work conducted by the Department. The course work has three papers, each of them carrying four credits, and thus the course work carries 12 credits in all. In Paper-I (Research Methodology), Credit-I deals with methodological issues in economics research, while Credits II and III contain topics in Basic Statistics and Basic Econometrics which are rather essential for research students in economics. The students are expected to be familiar with the research studies of famous economists listed in Credit-IV. Papers on Contemporary Economic Issues (Paper-II) and Recent Advances in Economic Theory (Paper-III) are divided into two groups. Each group consists of a number of topics and the students are required to choose any two topics from each group. Each topic carries one credit. The syllabus may be downloaded for details.The assessment of the performance of the students may include (i) Assignments, (ii) Literature review on any given topic (ii) Book review (iii) Presentation of any two topics from papers II & III and (iv) Written examination based on the relevant Ordinance and Regulation of the University.
